Poem - Marion Knowles

Men of Anzac, Men of Story
By Marion Knowles

Men of Anzac, men of story,
Who shall fitly sing your glory?
Youth the gold-haired, Age the hoary?
Fame still waits reply!
Men of Anzac, men who gave us
Life itself, to guard and save us,
Is there foe that now shall brave us?
Grandly did you die!

Grandly did you face the foeman,
Proudly true, and fearing no man;
Grandly as the glorious Roman
Held the bridge of old.
And that river, flowing, flowing-
Heroes' life-blood, redly glowing—
Fertilises soil for sowing
Seeds of life untold!

Men of Anzac, lying sleeping
Where above you none are weeping,
Rest in peace, for Right is sweeping
Forward, with the free!
By the seas that surge before you,
By the dear ones that adore you,
By Australia's hills that bore you,
Ours is victory!
