Poem - Winison Jennings

August 5th, 1915
By Winison Jennings
(11 year old)

One year of battle and of strife,
Of blood, of ghastly loss of life.
So many men have gone to war,
They come not back! their graves lie far
In Flanders or Gallipoli.
They died to keep their loved ones free.

And they are dead, their duty done;
You stay and shrink, an Empire’s son!
Come, give your best to aid the cause,
And keep for ever Freedom’s laws.
You waste your time ‘neath peaceful sky
While the Hun in Poland marches by.
Think of the freedom you can bring
To Belgium and her hero king.
